I like stories like this.

MOSCOW – Nearly a quarter-century after a German boy tossed a message in a bottle off a ship in the Baltic Sea, he's received an answer.

A 13-year-old Russian, Daniil Korotkikh, was walking with his parents on a beach when he saw something glittering lying in the sand.

"I saw that bottle and it looked interesting," Korotkikh told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "It looked like a German beer bottle with a ceramic plug, and there was a message inside."

His father, who knows schoolboy German, translated the letter, carefully wrapped in cellophane and sealed by a medical bandage.

It said: "My name is Frank, and I'm five years old. My dad and I are traveling on a ship to Denmark. If you find this letter, please write back to me, and I will write back to you."

The letter, dated 1987, included an address in the town of Coesfeld. The boy in the letter, Frank Uesbeck, is now 29. His parents still live at the letter's address.

"At first I didn't believe it," Uesbeck told the AP about getting the response from Korotkikh. In fact, he barely remembered the trip at all; his father actually wrote the letter.

The Russian boy and the German man met each other earlier this month via an Internet video link.
Korotkikh showed Uesbeck the bottle where he found the message and the letter that he put in a frame.

The Russian boy said he does not believe that the bottle actually spent 24 years in the sea: "It would not have survived in the water all that time," he said. He believes it had been hidden under the sand where he found it — on the Curonian Spit, a 100-kilometer (60-mile) stretch of sand in Lithuania and Russia.

In the web chat earlier this month, Uesbek gave Korotkikh his new address to write to and promised to write back when he receives his letter.

"He'll definitely get another letter from me," the 29-year-old said.

Uesbeck was especially thrilled that he was able to have a positive impact on a life of a young person far away from Germany.

"It's really a wonderful story," he said. "And who knows? Perhaps one day we will actually be able to arrange a meeting in person."

5 things that made me laugh this weekend

really old picture alert!
1. My puppy-mama co-worker read this article and started full on crying halfway through. It took her ten minutes to realize it was The Onion.

2. Zach tried to teach me to juggle. It lasted all of two minutes. I don't have very good hand-eye coordination.

3. BSB Cruise. A tropical vacation with Brian Littrell? All of my inner twelve-year-old's dreams come true.

4. This kid is just so pleased with himself. Hilarious.

5. Zach impersonating an Italian chef as we unpacked groceries last night.

P.S. See that red-headed beauty up there next to me? (photo a la 2006) Well she and her boyfriend stink got engaged over the weekend! Congrats, Jillybean. There's not a better pair out there, and I'm over the moon happy for you guys!

Sarah Kay: If I should have a daughter . . .

This video was exactly what I needed to see today.

I had the day off today, and I was actually really bored. Surprisingly nothing on my to-do list.
Zach said, "Write a book."
I said, "Yeah. But I don't have any interesting ideas."

I've said that countless times when trying to write or create something, may it be a poem, a performance, or a blog post. Of course I have interesting things to say. We all do.

Three hours later, I found this video. I feel interesting again : )

[insert exciting post title here]

I have a productive day planned, and none of it involves leaving the apartment. I will not acknowledge this snow. I will ignore it until it goes away.

Ok. Due to my productive day, I gave myself a time limit to write this post. I just wasted it staring at the screen. I can't believe the weather is the most exciting thing in my life today. Maybe later I'll regale you with my bathroom cleaning experience and how I braved the snow to take the garbage out.

time for a little link love

Here are some internet gems I'm loving on this rainy Tuesday.

The Pioneer Woman's lovely little post about her kitty. I love me some pet love.

These shoes. Such a fine line between need and want.

Do you guys know about these folks? They make me smile every day.

Take a trip down memory lane with Nick Pitera's One-Man Disney Movie. And then check out the rest of his stuff. Holy talent, Batman.

If this video doesn't make you want to pack your suitcase and take the red-eye to Europe, I don't know what will.

Happy surfing!

See that? That's a spring jacket.

It feels like I talk about the weather quite a bit on this blog. I guess it's just the easiest thing to talk about when you have nothing to say. And also I am just SO. SICK. of winter. Hi, Winter! You've overstayed your welcome. Please come back next year.
But it's officially spring now. Which means I can officially wear my new spring jacket, even if the temperature tells me I still need my fleece-lined numbers. I defy you, temperature!

We're pretty sure Nigel and Rupert are no more. And possibly Winston. There are some unrecognizable squirrels chillin' in their place lately, and no sign of our little friends. C'est la vie. I'll just keep thinking they ventured down to the ground once the snow started melting and found a better home. Or a squirrely hatch full of acorns and a save-the-world button to push.

I've been watching too much Lost.

It's Mmmmmmonday! Hope you had your wheaties!

Weekly Gratitude

In light of the suffering in Japan this week, I have SO MUCH to be grateful for. The little blessings in my life are that much clearer to me. I have a roof over my head, food in my cupboards, and clothes on my back. And on top of it, I have awesome family and friends who are healthy and happy.

I'm so grateful for the lives that have been saved, and for the heroes that are working there to help repair Japan's spirit. I hope everyone is keeping them in their thoughts.

Here are some hopeful stories to lift your spirits. Have a tissue ready.

Julie posted this quote a few days ago, and I'd like to share it with you. Cherish your days and your people.

“Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure that you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day, I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut and raise my hands to the sky and want, more than anything else, your return.”

Adele, you have my heart.

recipe: If you can actually cook, this is probably not for you.

I desperately needed some dessert last night, and the only chocolate I had in the house was in the form of hot cocoa mix.
So I thought to myself, "Self, what can you make with hot cocoa mix and almost nothing else?" (Starving artist, remember?)

Microwave Magic Chocolate Cake in a Mug
There's no real official name. But that's a good one.
If you're a foodie, or know how to cook even a little bit, this might be gross to you. I don't know. All I know is it was delicious, and my belly is happy. I feel no shame.

Hot cocoa mix (2 packets)
Flour, 2 Tbsp
Oil, 3 Tbsp
Water, 3 Tbsp
Egg, 1
Microwaveable coffee mug

1) Spray mug with cooking spray and add oil.

2) Add cocoa mix and flour. Mix well with a fork.

3) Add remaining ingredients. Mix very well with a fork.
I added a little bit of vanilla too, just for kicks.

4) Microwave for no more than 3 minutes.
It will puff up out of the mug quite a bit, but don't be scared. It'll sink back down.

5) Remove, and let stand a few minutes. Dump onto a plate and dig in.
I added some extra chocolate syrup for dipping. Go nuts.

The only downside was that my cake ended up having some small pieces of cooked egg throughout it. That's probably solved by just making sure to mix it really thoroughly. It was still delicious! (edit: I made it again, and beat the crap out of the batter. This seemed to solve the egg problem. So mix away, my little bakers!)

Enjoy. Seriously.

This is an outfit. And I'm sleepy.

I wore this to church with Zach's fam on Sunday. And then we ate ribs. Lots of them. I used my mad rib-eating skillz to keep my shirt nice and white.
I am thrilled beyond measure that we got to turn the clocks ahead, but dang if it didn't screw up my sleep schedule. I am exhausted. And therefore will nap right after I post this.

Zach is staying at his parents' house for his spring break this week, so I get the apartment to myself for a few days. I'll be going wild and watching lots of Gilmore Girls, cleaning the bathroom, and sleeping on the couch. It's gonna be awesome. Foh realz.

Weekly Gratitude

Here's what's made my week happy:

--that view of the sunrise this morning. Nothing like a good sunrise to get your day going. (Sorry the view of our parking lot isn't all that incredible.)

--Operation Apartment Hunt 2011 seems to be working out. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

--Adele's Rolling in the Deep. I listened to it on repeat for my entire walk home today.

--instant streaming Netflix. What a wonderful thing.

--the weekend! Hello! Welcome back! I'm going to use you to be outside, and rollerblade, and take pictures, and hang out with Zach's fam. It'll be awesome, promise. (Ok, I lied about the "being outside" part. I just checked the weather and it's supposed to snow again. Awesome.)

--my fabulous friends I saw last weekend. Love them. So much.

--colored tights. If there's anything besides bright lipstick that can make my day happy, it's colored tights.

--and last but not least, the promise of spring. And everything it brings. See those blue skies down there? Perfection.

Have a wonderful weekend! Let me know if you have any awesome shenanigans planned.

I can see spring! It's almost here!

We took these pictures at 5:30. It was still light out. Aaaaahhhh the happiness! Daylight savings cannot come soon enough!
Zach and I are on a major "LOST" kick. We've both seen the whole series, but we're rewatching it from the beginning and seriously. Can that show get any more awesome?
Also, it's that time of the year again. Shamrock Shake Season. I can deal with the remaining snow as long as there are Shamrock Shakes involved.

I'm a pancake fiend and a 30x30 loser.

Don't let the smiles fool you. It's still winter here.

I just made pancakes. None of them actually made it to the table because as soon as one was done cooking, I proceeded to eat it while I cooked the next one. It was a pretty rockin' system.
Except now, other than the giant pancake weight in my stomach, I still don't feel like I've actually eaten dinner. Things you eat while standing don't count, right?

Ok. Kendi's done with the 30x30. I am a major remix loser and have only posted 17 outfits! I pinky swear I've finished the challenge, but I haven't been able to take daily photos. Poll time!
Do you still want me to continue with the challenge and post my outfit photos when I'm able?
Or would you rather we call it finito and move on?

To be honest, I'd rather move on, cuddle my other clothes and give them some blog fame, but if you want to see the 30x30 remixes, have no fear! I shall make it so!

Did you guys have a delicious weekend? Tell me!

Weekly Gratitude

photo a la 2009, a few months after we started dating

--The teenager who sped by me on his bike and ever so politely said, "Excuse me. Sorry about that." For real. Gave me hope for our youth.
-My dad, for taking such good care of me and my car.
-My momma, for taking such good care of me and my now well-stocked refrigerator.
-Audition opportunities. Even when they don't go so well. I'm so lucky to live in a city that supports the arts and has such an expansive theatre community.
-My always amazing boyfriend, who buys me Oreos at the gas station when I'm having a bad day, and then proceeds to help me finish the entire package.

TGIF, right? See you Monday!

Awkward and Awesome Thursday

I'm sure you guys know the drill. Head on over to Sydney's blog and check out everyone else's A&A Thursdays.

-I had an egg sandwich for every meal yesterday.
-the guy singing downstairs. Like . . . seriously. He's not good and I just pity his poor little music-loving heart.
-ummm . . . the pretty mediocre audition I just had wherein I turned into an inarticulate fool when they asked me questions. Come on, guys! You gave me less than 24 hours to prepare!
-the older bank teller woman telling us about how she used to go streaking when she was in college.
-Zits. The little ones directly under your nose.
-The 2011 Oscars. Am I right? James Franco: stoned or just plain apathetic?

-I had an egg sandwich for every meal yesterday.
-Shamrock shakes. And LOST.
-I'm on a roll at work this week. Sadly, it makes me feel validated.
-I get to see some really good friends this weekend! And I haven't seen them in forEVER.
-Zach MacGyver-ing the cable on Sunday so we could watch the Oscars.
-The Oscars. Heartfelt acceptance speeches always make me cry. I love celebrating the arts.
-It's March. Springtime is near.

Happy Thursday, friends!

oh, that thing called life

Here are some pieces of what I wore today. The color mixing made for a pretty happy day.

Guys! I have exciting news! I have some big auditions coming up! And we're finishing the music video this weekend! And I'm using a lot of exclamation marks!

I'm super thrilled/overwhelmed by my busy week, but it means my blog posting this week has been less than exciting. Sorry for that! I'll be back on Friday for my Weekly Gratitude, and then hopefully I can resume with my 30x30 photos on Monday. I swear I'll finish this challenge, even if it takes me to July!

Ok. I promise it won't take me until July. I'm so ready to get the other side of my closet in on a little blog action.

Ok. Aaaaaaand break!

We interrupt the 30x30 to bring you . . . BROTHER STYLE!

He's got great style, no? And some pretty sweet supermodel moves.
My brother is hilarious and awesome. That's basically all you need to know about him.
Oh yeah, and he's a baseball stud. Like majorly.
He once told me that if we were trapped somewhere and forced to resort to cannibalism, that he would eat my biceps first because they were "tender and meaty."
It's not creepy. Just a sign of love.

Sweater, Jeans, Tee: He told me it's all Kohl's. Boys don't pay attention. But for real, it's probably all Kohl's.
Then sometimes he does sweet things like say I'm his role model.
Hence his supermodel moves.
